by Jack and Eileen Britton
There are many Dimensions of Faith. Close your eyes and try to envision what the typical Christian looks like, thinks like, and acts like. Is the person you envision male or female, young or old, tall or short? Would he or she think mostly about mercy or justice; identify with the rich or the poor; be conservative, moderate or liberal? Would he or she act out the faith by preaching, teaching, or serving others?
Jack and Eileen Britton would guess that the majority of people would envision the typical Christian looking, thinking, and acting much like themselves. If that is the case, we can conclude that a typical Christian cannot exist because we are all unique individuals. We come from different backgrounds, have different personalities, and live different lifestyles. But the Bible reminds us, “Being many, we are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
This book of short stories reveals how Christians from all walks of life apply faith in their lives. They believe in God’s word and the Bible, and they share their faith with others in a variety of ways. As the stories unfold, perhaps you will relate to some of the characters on a personal level. Then you can begin to appreciate the gifts God gives each of His children, and the fact that the fruit of the Spirit is present in individual lives of Christians everywhere.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Jack and Eileen Britton have been employed in service professions throughout their careers: Jack was a clinical social worker at a rural community health center; and Eileen was a nurse in an intensive care/coronary unit at a large metropolitan hospital. Through their respective vocations, they became acutely aware of the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of those they served.
Jack was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 1987, and he began writing short stories to take his mind off his illness. Eileen returned to school to earn a master’s degree, and she rediscovered her love for writing.
Eventually, they decided to write a book together, and it was completed just before Eileen was diagnosed with cancer. She died in August of 2003, and this book is being published in her memory.
Jack currently makes his home in Des Moines, Iowa. He has four grown children and six grandchildren.
