Drugs: Life's Lessons in Poems

by Vera B. Howard

The curtain of night falls without warning. I am thrown into a world I’ve never known. My heart is literally torn from my body. My screams are silent. My tears flow like a rapid waterfall. Yet I can’t scream, I can’t cry, I can’t feel anything. My heart is pounding, another sleepless night.

Every night, I awake at 3 a.m. Where are my emotions? I’m numb. I keep asking myself, “Michael, why Michael?” I’m suffocating, I can’t breathe. When does this confusion stop? No matter what I do, life will never be the same again!

This is the world of drugs!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Vera B. Howard was born on March 19 in Middletown, New York. She is of French Canadian descent on her mother’s side and English and Welsh on her father’s side, and she says that makes her who she is. She is a mother, a grandmother, and a writer.

Life has changed greatly since September 15, 1997, when her oldest son, Michael, died of a cocaine and heroin overdose at age 34. Her salvation was a positive belief system. The journey back was about survival. The two combine and the struggle for self begins.
