by Ron Evans

“Many of these pieces have been published before in somewhat different forms. I have revisited and tweaked them to suit my current sense of how they should be. The rest derive from a recent spurt of poetic zeal that partially stems from my growing sense of mortality and the need to leave some words behind. The first six pieces are, in fact, part of that new work and concern my sense of the poet’s craft. Clearly I have played with poetics — the rhyming and metrical conventions are loosely applied for effect and interest. Mostly, though, I choose freer verse to capture a kind of mental motion, perhaps an inner music to which these words become lyrics in my imagination.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ron Evans is a professor emeritus from the University of West Florida, Pensacola, Faculty of English. During forty years in academia, Ron published three books and dozens of journal articles, along with several short stories and poems, some of which appear in this collection. He also served as Dean of Arts and Sciences and Chairperson of English. Currently Ron is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator and directs the Mediation Services Office for the First Judicial Circuit of Florida.

“Ron Evans' poetry invites you into the depths of his mind and heart, but to say he writes from the heart would be an incomplete description of his verse. With some of his poetry he invites you into the gut of a situation to hear a direct synapse of emotions while he conveys the hopes of trying to satisfy the inner self with worldly pleasures, yet in others, he remains cognizant of a higher purpose. He points out the fragility of the body and the strength of the mind ... sensitive and the shared hard choices he makes with the reader. The poems also reflect the diversity of his mind and his ability to create. Dr. Ron Evans is a poet to be read.”

- Nelson O. Ottenhausen has been published nationally in both periodicals and anthologies. His short story Duty and his poem "Love" were recently in the Pensacola Today magazine. A collection of his poetry and four of his short stories have been published in a book, Flowers, Love & Other Things. He has also published two novels, Civil War II in 2004 and The Blue Heron in 2005.

"Words are 'the drug of choice' for poet Ron Evans. He gives us elixirs for the tongue and language as 'fresh as the crack of free range eggs,' as he probes the mysteries of life, death, sex, friendship and tempts us with the lure of other cultures."

- Patricia Taylor Edmisten, author of Nicaragua Divided: La Prensa and the Chamorro Legacy, The Mourning of Angels, and Wild Women with Tender Hearts.
