by Frederick H. Cooper

Set during the Apache Indian Wars, this is the story of Second Lieutenant Daniel Casey, fresh out of West Point and assigned to a remote military post in southern Arizona Territory. Inexperienced in the ways of the Apache, he allows a dangerous renegade prisoner, Juanito, to escape. Stung at his demotion to the leadership of a small band of Indian scouts by his commanding officer, the inscrutable Lieutenant Swain, he determines to exonerate himself. His loyalty to the scouts leads him on a dangerous foray south across the border into Mexico.

Packed full of exciting incident and period detail, this novel will appeal to the reader who is fascinated by the American West and by the aboriginal tribes who peopled it.
