After completing high school, he entered the Air Force and was stationed in Germany. Following military service, he received a bachelor's degree from Hofstra and a master's and Ph.D. from Stanford. After many years teaching German language and literature at the Davis campus of the University of California, he devotes himself now to writing fiction.
