Girl with Monkey
by Rosemary Mayo

Rose Perkins leaves 1920s England to work in Malaya as a nurse, and she challenges snobbery and the role of women. Her story is revealed in personal letters through World Wars I and II, and beyond, and in a journal written by her daughter Iris when revisiting Malaysia in 2002. During this, questions arise about the past. She ends her trip with a visit to Changi Jail to honor Jacko, a lifelong friend of Rose and a man Iris idolized when she was a child. Here, she sees his painting, Girl with Monkey, and begins to understand a family secret.
