by Anita Marie Shirk

This is poetry at its worst! I feel that I didn’t have much control over it. I don’t have a lot of knowledge about meter and such things. I did have a vision of God handing me this stuff, though.

It is really odd that sometimes I think of these poems when someone is talking about something in one of our classes or just in everyday conversation, and it will remind me of a poem I wrote. Sometimes I share the poem with the speaker.

I have published a few of my poems on the Internet and in anthologies, and those are noted in the book. One of my favorites is “God’s Eyes.” That literally makes me wild with excitement. I wrote this in a single sitting. It just all jelled. We had been talking about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and we were in our garden at the time and the poem came to me.

Another favorite I have is “The Orchid as Eucharist.” It explains the mystery of the Eucharist, which so many of us have trouble grappling with until we really try with God’s grace to wrap our minds around it. Of course, it is written from a Roman Catholic point of view. I know this poetry was meant to be shared. I showed a poem that I have not included in this book to someone and it changed her life. She literally decided to take one path in her life rather than the other.

Now that is exciting! I hope you think so, too!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Anita Marie Shirk. I have a husband, Tim, and a son, Tim. I also have a pet dog, a Bishon Frise named Pepi, who is very cute. I have been a social worker for a number of years since 1977, and I graduated from UND in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Right now, I am retired and writing. We live in Rolette, North Dakota.

My husband and I are taking theology classes so he can become a deacon with the Catholic Church. I find these classes to be very interesting and fulfilling to my spiritual growth. My son is a musician, visual artist, journalist, and a computer technician. He is grown and lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

I began writing poetry when I was fifteen years old. I have been writing serious poetry for only the past few months. I enjoy reading a lot, gardening, my family, my dog, traveling, and all of my groups such as my Writing Club, Benedictine Oblates, attending Writers Conferences, and attending Marian Conferences.

My goal in life at this point is to just drift. I have spent my whole life very focused on my career in social work, including attending graduate school at one point, and now I enjoy just “drifting.” Poetry helps me do that!
