The Man Without a Backbone

by Pita Hakeem

In this novel of political intrigue, Harvard-trained mogul Izeek Samek leaves his cozy business empire and ventures into the murky political waters of his beloved country, the imaginary African Republic of Bakoko. He is elected to the National Assembly of the Second Republic as a senator and later appointed Honourable Minister for Commerce and Construction.

Izeek’s election and appointment is contested bitterly by the opposition parties. The situation takes a dangerous turn as the nation prepares for another election and Izeek discovers he is the catalyst that sparks off serious unrest that threatens the peace of the country and his life.

Will the nascent democracy of the Bakoko Republic survive the onslaught of the opposition? Or will the civilian administration preferred by the people despite its flaws fall to a “perfect” military regime?
