by Merlin "Mert" Hatcher
In 1883 U.S. Marshal Saber receives a telegram from Sheriff Dugan in Sundance, Wyoming Territory. A wanted man was seen riding South. Bill Pierce is soon captured near Shannon. Deputy Talley is ordered to escort the suspect to the federal judge at Rawlins, Wyoming. The long ride from Shannon to Rawlins and hence to Sundance holds many misfortunes for Deputy Marshal Talley. A sequel to the Three Stolen Mares, this story takes the deputy and a prisoner on a long, treacherous ride.
At Rock River, he is ambushed; Talley kills the man. At Rawlins he avoids being killed again. A telegram orders the deputy to bring his prisoner back to Shannon and thus return him to Sundance. Pierce, for the first time, tries an unsuccessful effort to kill the deputy before reaching Shannon. Accosted by three gunmen on nearing Sundance, with unexpected help from his prisoner, the men are suitably dealt with.
Reaching Sundance the deputy finds it to be far more than an accidental killing. Pierce faces appropriate justice in Sundance.
