ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Sydney Welch attended college at Alabama State University in Montgomery. He left college in his junior year to serve in the Marines. He trained with the Naval Air Technical Command and served with the Black Sheep Squadron, VMF 214.

Returning to Montgomery in 1954, Dr. Welch heard, saw, and participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott under the leadership of Martin Luther King and the heroic people on Montgomery. After dental school, he returned to Birmingham and spent three years preparing for the historic episode in the civil rights struggle--the Battle of Birmingham.
