Bringing Together EXEGESIS and CATECHESIS in the TODAY of Liturgical Proclamation and Celebration

by Nihal Abeyasingha

The ideal liturgical homily is described in Luke 4:16-30: "Jesus read the SCRIPTURES; he proclaimed, "TODAY THIS TEXT IS BEING FULFILLED, even as you listen.'" He won the approval of all; others rejected him. This form of preaching has been continued throughout the history of the Church. In addition to the language of the scriptures, in the course of the centuries A CHRISTIAN IDIOM AND GRAMMAR has developed - a special heritage of the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, in our day, this idiom and grammar seem to be in the danger of being ignored. And hence, the present proposal-a three-year cycle of homilies that combines the scriptures and Catechesis (our Catholic idiom) with the "today" of Christ's presence celebrated in the liturgy. We hope this book will lead to a re-catechized and re-evangelized Catholicism in our day.

About the Author

The author, Nihal Abeyasingha, is a Catholic priest. He combines a knowledge of several disciplines-civil law, philosophy, theology, world religions, culture, and languages-with a couple of earned doctorates; extensive pastoral ministry in many settings and teaching in both seminaries and secular universities; several academic and popular publications; and dozens of homilies published in many countries. This book is offered as a contribution to the Church today, where a renewal of the language and idiom proper to the Catholic tradition seems to be in urgent need of renewal and restoration.
