by Nada Boskovic Micic
The name of this book is connected to the last poem and in that way, it closes the work as a whole. Also, it emphasizes one of dominant tones of classical myths and figures in these poems, but it is used in a modern, contemporary frame. The first section, “Trodden Roses,” is named after a haiku, which has a rose in the dust for a motif. It symbolizes a personal feeling of mine, which prevails in many poems. It gives the collection a specific tone—the feeling of an immigrant who has to fight very hard in order to find her identity and status in a new and foreign environment, while longing for her suffering family at home, who is in poverty and under bombs, wishing to rise from the dust, among other things. These two names intertwine the objective and subjective themes in my collection.
However, the collection contains a palette of tones and colors. In addition to melancholy, despair, and pain, I have put a crown on my poetry by finding an exit from the darkness through religious and moral values, and prayers and beliefs in salvation for the honest, kind, and pious, who have given my work at times optimistic, and at the other times, mystic tones.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nada Boskovic Micic was born near Belgrade (Serbia & Montenegro). As a secondary teacher (Latin, Classics, and Social Studies), she has worked in secondary schools in Belgrade, Wellington (New Zealand), and Perth (Australia).
Since 1994, she has lived in New Zealand and Australia. Her poetry writing and publishing (in Serbian and English) has started mainly in New Zealand. Many of the poems were published first in newspapers. One of her books of children’s poetry was published in Belgrade after it had achieved a “Special Award” at a competition for Serbian literature in Australia in 2001. Several poems from her collection were published by www.poetry.com, www.voicesnet.com, and Noble House in its anthologies. In 2004, Nada was also awarded first place for her poetry for adults in Serbia at the mentioned competition.
Nada’s poetry represents a magic that takes her away from dull reality and difficult times. When a war was happening in her country, everything dramatically changed for worse, bringing her a lot of suffering. But writing gives her a hope and means to explore herself, finding a way out of despair and regaining her pride.
